Unless you can easily rerun all transactions since the last backup or
have a live duplicate machine with which you can synch up your tables
after a crash, KEEP LOGGING TURNED ON! Also you should not be backing
logs to /dev/null. If you cannot dedicate a tape drive to ontape -c
and have too much activity to backup logs periodically, get my
submission to the IIUG Software Repository, utils3_ak, which contains
two methods for backing up logs to disk as they fill. You can then
sweep them to tape with the nightly system backup. (You do back up
don't you?) As to the long transactions during deletes...break the
deletes up using a where clause into several smaller transactions so
that you do not run out of locks and fill the log files causing a long
transaction. Also you could increase the number of log files so that
you can support larger transactions without triggering a long
transaction condition.
