Re: pager S/W suggestions.

Clive,
If you are on a unix system, you can write a script that just calls
dbaccess to do something unimportant, like count the number of rows in a
table. Test the status, $?, after the command. If it is not 0 then use the
unix "cu" command to call the pager number with a certain code. In the
/usr/lib/uucp/Systems file, make an entry for the pager that looks
something like this:
infmxdown <other parms that are required> <phonenumber,,,1> <other parms>
So, it will dial the phone number of the pager, pause a couple of seconds
while the pager service answers, then sends a 1 to indicate that informix
is down. Or change the 1 to a code of your choice for different
circumstances. I use this regularly when conversion scripts are running
that fail, when a static table gets changed, or to let me know a job is
finished.
If the whole system is down is another story. If you have multiple systems
networked together, you may be able to some type of "remote command"
between all the different systems. If contact is not made to the other
system, then call a pager. This assumes the system with the modems is not
down.
