I had a problem last year with queries choosing wrong indexes and we had one of the optimizer developers here on site for a day and his solution was to manually muck the sysindexes attributes fields (nunique, levels, leaves, clust) until the index we wanted looked more desireable to the optimizer than the one it seemed to prefer. Anyway this engineer stated that those columns are only accessed by the optimizer for determining which of several candidate indexes will be most efficient. They are never looked at by the operational portions of the engine so it is safe to update these manually. You just need to be careful in the sense that while fixing query on eyou may break query 2.
