What value is saved to a char variable if the field is null

If the valued being selected from the database is null, assuming a char array, what value will be stored into the variable. I know that an indicator variable will tell me that the value is null, but I would like to know what the actual array value will be. i.e will a string termination be in the first array position. and assuming the informix string type is used.
