Migration/Warehousing Survey!
Posted in 1996
Data Conversion / Migration Survey Audience : This survey is for managers, programmers, developers and consultants currently involved in or previously involved in a Data Migration, Replication or Warehousing project of notable size (i.e. anywhere from hundreds of megs to hundreds of terrabytes of information.) I have attempted to keep it brief (9 questions), but I would like to start with a good grasp of what kind of problems people are currently facing, so I know what kind of information would be helpful to include in our mailing group. If you have any additional notes, please be sure to include them, as well-- or, if you would like to be included in the "Data Migrations" mailing group, just forward all replies to : ferret@crl.com. Thanks! ========= 1. What kind of project(s) have you or your organization been involved in? (Check all applicable) ___ Data Migration, Mainframe to Client/Server ___ Data Migration, Mainframe to Mainframe ___ Data Migration, Client/Server to Client/Server (such as an RDBMS change, or large scale application change.) ___ Data Warehouse or Decision Support System ___ Data Replication 2. What was your source hardware/software platform? 3. What was your destination hardware/software platform? 4. How did you physically move the information? (ie Network Lan, mountable tape, etc.) 5. How long did the entire conversion project take? (or, if an ongoing project such as a Data Warehouse, how long did it take to set up?) 6. How much information was transferred? 7. How many members were on your conversion team? 8. In percentages, how much of time was spent doing each of the following in your conversion? ___ Physically downloading the data from the source DBMS ___ Planning the table mappings ___ Writing code to map the data ___ Writing code to clean or manipulate the data ___ Physically uploading the data to the target DBMS 9. What were the greatest stumbling blocks you hit during the course of your conversion? ======= And thats it! Fairly painless, I hope. I will be more than happy to forward the results of this survey to anyone who takes the time to respond. Thanks in advance! J.
