Web-based client for Informix 5.x

Hi, I'm helping a friend code up a web-based client for Informix Online 5.x database backend. This project is really getting on my nerves because I do not have access to any Informix5 database so left almost everything on assumption. I based my coding on DBI/DBD::Oracle (which I am familiar with) hoping that DBD::Informix will be the same (fingers crossed). Unfortunately, I am unable to compile DBD::Informix due to the required server. I did get my hands on the C-SDK but the version is 7.2UC3. Here are several ventures I am looking into... - Does anyone have DBD::Informix compiled that will work with Informix5? Jonathan Leffler was of great help here when he gave me the assurance that it will work with the correct version of C-SDK. :). btw, is there such a version for Linux (intel)?? This will allow me to test my codes on my friend's client's site so I can recommend the purchase. - Is there any ODBC drivers that works with Informix? If so, I can still use my codes but link them to DBD::ODBC instead. Here, I'm looking into the drivers from openlinksw. - As the final resort, is it possible to maintain an online data-replication between Oracle and Informix? I'm still open to suggestions (as you can see I'm not too bright). Thanks in advance. You could try our ODBC driver: SCO SQL-Retriever; talks to Informix 4-7 (SE/OnLine) quite happily. We also do a JDBC driver which might be more help to you: access to databases from a Web browser. Take a look at http://www.sco.com/vision/products/sqlretriever/ for more information and a downloadable eval. As long as you stick with ANSI SQL data types and SQL statements, you should be OK. The Oracle extensions are generally incompatible with Informix, and vice versa. That requires you to have some insight into what is standard and what is not, of course. > Unfortunately, I am unable to compile DBD::Informix due to the > required server. Are you saying you didn't manage to get DBD::Informix to compile with CSDK or ESQL/C, or that you haven't been able to get a 5.x ESQL/C and/or server to match what your friend has? If it is the latter, then it is reasonable - 5.x is getting towards the end of its life and may not be available to new customers. If it is the former, I want to know the details of the failure, per the instructions in the README file. If you can get the 7.2x stuff to work, you can do 90% of your testing with the newer system. It will only cause you problems if you try to revert to the older software and use features which were not supported in the older version. The most significant such feature would probably be the CONNECT operation, which in 5.x is not available. It is mimiced by using a DATABASE statement, but you cannot specify the user name or password (or rather, they are totally ignored if you specify them). > Here are several ventures I am looking into... > - Does anyone have DBD::Informix compiled that will work with > Informix5? The ODBC drivers would most likely be for 7.2x or later. > - As the final resort, is it possible to maintain an online > data-replication between Oracle and Informix? Probably not. There might a 3rd party product that can help, but most likely not. -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.60 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>

Plus, I have no access to an informix server to get pass the esqltest program... I was very tempted to "bypass" that on the Makefile but figured that will gain me nothing. > If you can get the 7.2x stuff to work, you can do 90% of your testing > with the newer system. I see from dbdimp.ec that CONNECT is used for esql_version >=6 and DATABASE otherwise. I presume that these are sql commands (from the EXEC SQL prefix). What is the suggested work-around? I am thinking of "faking" the version number. I'll get to his client's site later today with the 7.2x stuff and see if it works with the 5.x server. I'll report back to this forum my findings :). >> Here are several ventures I am looking into... >> - Does anyone have DBD::Informix compiled that will work with >> Informix5? It will talk to a Informix Online 5.x (I got it right this time ;PPP) running on a hp/ux. Any clues? >> - Is there any ODBC drivers that works with Informix?
