Upper Limit on Extents

Hi,
I read in the performance manual the procedure to obtain the upper limit of
number of extens for a table, but it said that I have to run the oncheck
command with two options, is there another way to obtain this limit without
using the oncheck command?
I don't have permission to run oncheck command and I'm usinig version 9.4.
Thanks.
Hi,
there should be a section in the release notes
(check $INFORMIXDIR/release/en_us/0333 directory)
about limits ...
Regards, Martin

Hi:
You will get different upper limit of the number of extent, this is depended
on your table's definition and which page size you used to store the table, so
maybe you have to get the real information by oncheck or other tools only, you
need to read the partition page's information.
You are running IDS 9.40 so there is only one pagesize, the default
pagesize. That would be 2K unless you are running on AIX or Windows where
the default pagesize is 4K. So, general rule, on a 2K pagesize machine the
maximum number of extents that any partition (read partition as a table, a
detached index, or a fragment of a table or index) can have is about 216.
This is further reduced for tables with attached indexes (usually inherited
from a 7.2x server that was upgraded in place) by the index key length over
eight, and by the number of 'special' column (blobs, varchars, etc.). On a
4K pagesize machine use 472 as the maximum.
