Besides the DYNAMIC_LOGS in IDS 9.4, there are some occasions where you
want to take advantage of all your log space. Our system is mixed OLTP
with some DSS activity. As much as I wish we could separate the
activities, we cannot.
Sometimes, when we have major loads, we want to be able to use all of
the log space available. Up go LTXHWM & LTXEHWM. Of course, if the DBA
is not careful, you get into a long transaction and are hung. That is
bad, but is it "dumb"?
"Dumb" is pretty subjective, when one DBA's tuning disaster is another
DBA's tuning necessity.
When I worked for Informix support, we would keep track of the "stupid
user trick of the week". This we reserved for folks like the customer
who opened a case to ask how to spell oninit.
