Managing Raw Space Outside Volume Manager

Looking for information/experience/specifics regarding managing raw disk space outside the control of volume manager software to include pro's and con's of doing so. We will be utilizing a Sun E4000 with Informix 7.24 and Multipack disk storage. And.....thanks so much for those responses received thus far on a related topic. As always, the technical experience and information shared by this mailgroup is very much appreciated.
