Check the INFORMIXDIR, TBCONFIG, and SQLEXEC environment variables. The engine must be up, but one or more of these variables doesn't match the engine's environment, so isql is looking in the wrong place. If TBCONFIG and SQLEXEC are not set, make sure that the engine is using the tbconfig file "$INFORMIXDIR/etc/tbconfig".
