RE: Informix and Oracle in the same shop -Reply

James: We have an old DG AViion 5225 running ORACLE v old.very_old and INFORMIX v 5.04 simultaneously. ORACLE comes up first, then INFORMIX. Have plenty o' archive/log devices available. The only problem we have encountered is that, on occassion, after rebooting, INFORMIX cannot initialize shared memory. Rebooting once or twice corrects this problem and the two then co-exist. (I don't care to solve the problem, because both the ORACLE and 5.x INFORMIX apps are being migrated to INFORMIX 7.23) HTH -- Sky >>> May, James <mayj@fdhc.state.fl.us> 06/02/97 01:27pm >>> I've been watching this thread with some interest. Enough of the philosophical discussion on why you might place Informix and Oracle in the same shop. There are valid reasons you might do so. I just found this out the hard way. I'm a new DBA in an Informix shop. My boss just informed me that we will get Oracle as a part of a new project. The exact why(s) aren't really that important. What is important is that we will have Informix and Oracle on the same machine and that I will be the administrator for both. Has anyone out there had experiences running Informix and Oracle on the same machine? What are the technical issues to address when doing so? Are there any shared memory issues? How do you handle continuous logging for both systems? What are the pitfalls to look out for? Should I be looking for a new job? :-) James May Database Administrator, Agency for Health Care Administration, Florida voice 904.413.9072 email = mayj@fdhc.state.fl.us }---------- }From: ic[SMTP:iac@frc.com] }Sent: Monday, June 02, 1997 12:54 PM }To: pablo@sgi.com }Cc: informix-list@rmy.emory.edu }Subject: Re: Informix and Oracle in the same shop } }Definitely have to agree with Pablo on this one. } } }* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * } }On 2 Jun 1997, Pablo Sanchez wrote: } }} }} In article <01bc6e57$5fdd9ae0$618285ce@ian>, "Ian Sparkes" }<sparkes@sprintmail.com> writes: }} > I would also be interested in hearing why you feel Informix is a better }} > choice for a large data warehouse. }} > }} > The major differentiation between Oracle and Informix is normally the }} > available tools.
