All of the disk operations are controlled by the controller - so check out the specs for a few controllers that are compatible with your hardware and see which will perform best. By the way, if the controller handles the RAID, your system doesn't see how many actual reads or writes which occur in the disk subsystem. I personally like to mirror DB servers (letting the disk controller handle the mirroring function) and use RAID 5 for fileservers (again letting the disk controller handle the RAID).
