Re: Informix 5.x/7.x Backup

With OnLine 7.X, as in 5.X, all dbspaces can be saved to a single tape. The added functionality that 7.X gives you is that: a) You can specify that only certain dbspaces be saved to a tape b) You can specify that only certain dbspaces are restored from tape. In general, even in 5.X, it's a good idea to put databases in their own dbspaces, for performance reasons if nothing else. You should also avoid putting databases in the root dbspace. I like to have a dbspace for logical logs, the root dbspace (which also contains the physical log), and one dbspace (or more) for each database. You can use this model even if you really only have one physical disk -- just slice the disk or use offsets. Hope this helps, - Thomas J.
