How are you connecting to the Internet? Can your client ping the database server when you are connected to the internet? It is possible than the way you connect to the internet causes you to loose connectivity to your server Or if both your client and server are on the same machine, your ip address might have been changed because of dial up. Not having worked with nt sockets much I am not sure how previously existing sockets behave once you dial up to the internet. You might try not bringing the database server up till the connection to the internet has been established.
