Re: Another Informix news item (IBM/SAP)

do you have any specific name to kick-&-scream to? i have been kicking & screaming for months.... ask Stuart Litel, Mark Scranton, Martin Fuerderer. but as you say, if this is not an IBM problem, who do we kick at SAP? SAP's preferred space is probably not Oracle, Oracle wants their business (doesn't it want everyone's?). Didn't SAP sell it's MaxDB to MySql?.... SAP wants business, they are an application, they reportedly don't care what DB you run on, they just want you on SAP. SAP claims IDS has unicode and java problems.... well, how come it's only SAP that talks about it... nobody else does... do you all have unicode or java problems on non-SAP Informix installs? I think SAP's making that up... or calling it that because it's convenient. With Netweaver they want more "middleware" market..... it would seem they know they can't push IBM, Oracle, and Microsoft from the DB market so they will leave that to the open-source folks to fight. don't say people will most likely migrate to oracle, that's not necessarily true. oracle is very expensive, and they always want more. sqlserver is a database to be respected, it runs on microsoft, but that won't hold it back for long, microsoft o/s is getting more reliable. the SAP/Informix market will be open to whichever DB vendor plays the best cards and makes the best deal.... and has the best support. The differences in DB functionality are pretty much null/void when running under SAP. But you have a point.... the decision makers aren't the DBAs, the decision makers are higher than that.... and influenced by sales and marketing..... hmmmmmm.... yup, i guess you are right.... oracle will get most of the business regardless of the quality of their product. Norma Jean.... Informix Sr.DBA, Oracle Jr.DBA Sqlserver 'intern'.
