Does parent have the same value for all three instances? If so, you can
simplify the table to be parent, child1, child2, and child3, and simply
select redundantly as needed.
: 3. How are enumerated types defined (i.e. A = {red, pink, blue})?
We've typically used a linked table to achieve that effect. For example,
define table colors consisting of id serial and description char(10).
Now you can store the id with your other data records, using "foreign
key" to force consistency. This is a bit sketchy, but hopefully this
plus the manuals will point you in a direction.
