out of shared memory?
Posted in 2013
Informix 11.70 on HPUX was experiencing shared memory allocation failures (shmget ENOMEM errors). Root cause: the SHMADD config parameter was set to an incorrect value (41943040) after using OAT tool. OAT was converting input values by multiplying by 1024, causing 40960 to become 41943040. Solution: manually edit the onconfig file with vi to set correct SHMADD value and restart the engine.

Starting about two weeks ago we are getting out of memory errors from time to
time. Up until the problem start the config file was not changed for about a
year. Twice we have gotten af files from this.
We get this in the error in the log file and some users get an error when
trying to logon that they can't open a connect.
shmget: [ENOMEM][12]: key 52564809: The server ran out of memory during an
attempt to allocate a new shared memory segment.
I'm going to battle my ERP provider to get IBM to look at our config and we
can't keep having these slowdowns and crashes.
Here are some of my setting in the onconf file.
VPCLASS aio,num=24
CLEANERS 36AUTO_AIOVPS 1
DIRECT_IO 0
RESIDENT 2
SHMBASE 0x0L
SHMVIRTSIZE 983040
SHMADD 41943040
EXTSHMADD 32768
SHMTOTAL 0
SHMVIRT_ALLOCSEG 0
Anyone see anything wrong at this subset of the settings?

How much memory is currently allocated to the engine (onstat -g seg) and
what is the total memory use on the machine (ipcs -ma ).

It has been a while since I configured an HP system, but I believe the
shared
memory need to be backed by swap space. If you have enough memory but
not enough swap space you might not be able to allocate any more shared
memory.
FYI, generally the two biggest consumers of the Informix shared memory are
the
database buffers and shmvirtsize/shmadd. Without see any real stats
about your system, but see you have 24GB of real memory. Your shmivrtsize
and shmadd seem small.

SHMADD 41.943.040KB
Is this correct correct?
41GB of next segment?

It seems when I used OAT to make a change to SHMADD about 10 days ago per IBM
tech for another problem, OAT generate a funky number. Or I don't know how to
use OAT as this was my first try at using it to make config changes.
I entered 40960 for SHMADD and selected save to memory and file. OAT seemed to
enter 41943040. I just tried again and change it to 65536 and get 67108864.
OAT says it is version 3.11 2013-02-20 05:00:34 I thought this was the latest.
Will correct the old fashion way of vi'ing the file and bouncing the engine.

Hmmm.
The number you enter is off by a factor of 1024 seems like oat is expecting
it to be entered in Meg and then translating it to K to store in the
onconfig file. Can you specify what the units are in the input ?
George.
