Never come over that before (Gasp - something I haven't even heard of)

Links are nothing to be worried about - most products install them.
I think the default for Informix installations on a Sun is to install
into /opt/informix.

Make sure that your enviroment variable INFORMIXDIR is set to
/opt/informix. Then do
$INFORMIXDIR/lib/sqlexec -V
If this succeeds you are running Informix Standard Engine (the cheap
version of the database server) rather than Informix OnLine (the more
expensive,faster, most robust server).
if this fails try
$INFORMIXDIR/bin/tbstat -V
which will give you the version of Informix OnLine.
any version below v7 is not the latest version and if possible I would
upgrade to v7 before anything else.
