Linux on Informix with many users?

Folks, I am considering setting up an Informix system on Linux for about 20 users. It will be Informix SE with 4GL entry screens and reports, processes etc. My question is, with 20 users running queries and doing data entry, will I get reasonable performance? I plan on getting a decent Intel box with a lot of memory. Any suggestions or comments welcome. We are currently running SE on an HP-9000 which is about 8 years old, and I figure the Linux box could'nt be any slower, could it? Thanks, Julien
This is a great question. Things should work just great, Linux and Informix and today's pentium should scream! When I first started with informix 10 years ago, we had an Altos 1000 running SE (there was no Online back then). we had 20+ users keying in medical data on the same machine we used for development and production reports. I'd like to hear how this Linux and Informix combo works out, I think it would be a great way to compete with MicroSoft on some smaller level systems. Hi Julien, I'm planning to go in the same direction. I will be connecting 40 user online with my legacy system working on Informix 9, under Linux Red Hat 6. Please let me know your experience. The server will be a Dell 2300, 2 PIII processors and 512 MB RAM, 2 9.1 Gb HD. I think it will be ok for an excellent performance. So I hope! Thank you for copying me your feedback. Hi, we have 7.30UC7 now for 3 weeks in production with nearly 40 users. Currently we had no problems and the whole system runs just fine. As hardware we use a Dual Pentium Board (i don't remember the brand) two PIII 500, 512MB Memory, Mylex DAC 960 with 6 Harddrives configured as Raid 5 with hotstandby. The whole system is based on a Suse 6.1 distribution with Kernel 2.2.12 Uli Jack Regel wrote: > > This is a great question.
