Is it possible? What about INFORMIXDIR env. variable?
Yes, you can do that. You will have to set INFORMIXDIR, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and PATH to point to the 4GL directory for development and for applications written in 4GL to run and use the INFORMIXSQLHOSTS environment variable to point to the sqlhosts file installed in the engine's $INFORMIXDIR/etc or make a link to it in the 4GL $INFORMIXDIR/etc. But it works. Yes it is possible, and even recommended (if you want your developers team not to have access to dba tools, for example) but if your asking about "engine on 64 bits" and 4gl client only (32 bits) you could install the 4gl first, then the engine, on the same dir, no problems. (I´ve doing this on linux_64 machine, you didn´t specify your environment), sorry. Best regards. INFORMIXDIR is always the product installation directory for the tools/command you're using. You will notice that Art prefers to put everything in the same dir, but I don't like that. Obviosuly this is not a question if your client machine is different from the database server. I like do install each in it's own directory because it keeps things separately, you don't have to care about product installation order, you don't have to care about directory permissions (you may want to give different access to different installations), and it's easier to clean up if you upgrade one of them. -- Fernando Nunes Portugal http://informix-technology.blogspot.com My email works... but I don't check it frequently... --0022152d6e59d515e70491f5a383
