RE: iDS-On-iPhone
Posted in 2008
A poster asked whether IDS has been ported to or installed on the iPhone, reasoning that since the iPhone runs Mac OS X and IDS runs on Mac OS X, it might work. The replies were mostly jokes and skepticism (battery life, practicality), plus the key technical point that the iPhone uses an ARM processor rather than Intel, so it would not be a trivial port, and memory/storage limits would be a problem. An IBM developer suggested IBM's SOLID in-memory database as a far more suitable small-footprint option. No one reported an actual IDS-on-iPhone port, so no resolution is recorded.

Yup, got my 4TB data warehouse running on it. Makes it a lot easier to support, don't have to go to work to check on it, but it's a real pain when clients connect... my phone bill is going to go through the roof this month. j. Snicker snicker.... I fully appreciate the cynicism. :-) I get it. However......... Considering the real choices in operating systems, Apple is actually showing itself a much better choice on a lot of fronts, especially since the iPhone is running Mac OS X. In terms of OS choices, it is basically a UNIX, similar to Linux--or should I say OSX is _a lot of Linux_ inside, a cousin so to speak. Since the iPhone is running OSX, I figured a logical conclusion is to see if IDS for Mac OSX would be capable of being installed on the iPhone. Obviously asking this group was the wrong thing to do! I was wrong! :-) Jack Parker wrote: > Yup, got my 4TB data warehouse running on it. An iPhone already has a battery life of less than one day when used as a music player. Assuming that running a database will be no less onerous, what possible use would there be to a portable database server that died halfway through the day? -- Bye now, Obnoxio "There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Maybe what you really need is to get laid, or at least a colon cleansing to possibly get you out of your perpetual funky crabbiness. Go smash some glass or something... Anyway... The iPhone comes with the SQLite database. IDS works on MAC OS X. iPhone runs MAC OS X. Hmmmmm... wonder if somebody got it installed on the gadget either for the sake of just trying it, or maybe they were <ahem> thinking of using IDS as an embedded database on the thing just to tinker with it. Might even be a great platform for Informix SE. Obnoxio The Clown wrote: > InDeep said: >> Obviously asking this group was the wrong thing to do! Hi, even though there's IDS on MacOS, a more feasable and practical product for the iPhone might be SOLID (in memory, tiny footprint, etc). So it is not a trivial port. BEsides, do you *really* need a full database there? Maybe Online 5.0 or SE will do.

Maybe Online 5.0 or SE will do. Yes. Exactly. If I recall it wasn't even a few months ago IDS was still being touted as an embedded database. So... it would be interesting to see SE on the iPhone. Is there an application for it? I have no idea, but was curious more than anything to see if this was an opportunity, despite mine and others not having any real idea if it would be useful. The iPhone SDK is amazing by the way, you must see it to appreciate it. It comes with the Aspen iPhone simulator, and a lot of widgets, all in an amazing assortment of tools for developing applications.
Embedded means different things to different people. You *can* embed IDS in to a product. Like a telephone switch. You *may* embed IDS in to the iPhone. The port may not be *trivial* but if the OS is ported, then you should be able to cross compile to the platform. But you have to be cognizant of memory and storage limitations. The idea is that this could be an interesting hack. The biggest issue is going to be the amount of memory on the device and if you can use an external storage like a microSD This could lead to a *cloud* type of database. Storing little bits of information on multiple machines around the cloud... Interesting. ;-) > From: indeep@indeep.com > Subject: Re: iDS-On-iPhone > Date: Wed, 19 Mar 2008 08:03:09 -0700 > To: informix-list@iiug.org > > > > Zachi wrote: > > > > the iPhone is a different processor - it is an ARM, not an Intel Core > > Duo.
