The most complete description available is in the SQL that creates those
tables. See it at $INFORMIXDIR/bin/*.sql .
The official reason that the OAG gives such a limited description is that
the structure of those tables is subject to rapid change with new versions,
and only the ones that are supported over the "long" term are described.
(It says so in that same chapter.)
For an source of good information outside Informix, you can visit the
web site of the IIUG at http://www.iiug.org , and the web site of the
Washington DC area users group at
http://www.access.digex.net/~lester/waiug.html .
Lester Knutsen has developed a brilliant set of SMI and sysmaster
queries, and documented them to boot. Had you been at the Informix User
Conference you could have seen him in person giving a presentation on his
tools. (Courtesy of the IIUG Technical Track.)
You can also see if Platinum Technology still makes their wonderful
poster "The SMI and Sysmaster tables of the INFORMIS-OnLine Dynamic Server
7.1".
Their web address is http://www.platinum.com . Though it doesn't contain
a great deal of documentation, it does have a good one-glance overview.
Finally, be sure to join the IIUG Advocacy team on Performance,
Administration,
Tools, and Utilities. One of their missions is to communicate to Informix
the need for better DBA tools such as a fully documented guide to the
sysmaster
database and the SMI. (Another is to plead for a more thoroughly documented
onstat command.)
