Database A can contain the shared data table(s), and database B can contain synonyms which refer to the tables in database A. You could even mix'n'match so that both A and B contained some shared tables and both contained some synonyms, though I see no virtue in such an arrangement. There would be no need to have I-Star, and the performance impact should be minimal. If the two databases are on separate OnLine systems, then you will need to consider more carefully. You will need I-Star to talk between the systems (even if they are on the same machine), and you will need to consider the performance of the queries, bearing in mind that some of the queries will be done by remote access.
