Richard I am also a 'non-native American English speaker' (I'm on the better side of the pond :-) ). Melanistic could be deemed to a euphemism for black, but more precisely it means unusually dark or black pigmentation where this is not the norm - the opposite of an albino which has an absence of normal (or any) pigmentation.
