Re: Question about update of 7.13 to 7.23
Posted in 1998
Prior to my recent upgrade from 7.14 to 7.23 I was advised by Informix to =
export the databases. Drop them and reload following the upgrade.
I believe that this is not absolutely neccessary, but it does give you a =
clean start, especially coming from 7.13 which is a dog.
I did the dbexports, and level zero archives.
It is recommend that you run oncheck over your system prior to the archive =
or the restore may have problems.
I would also check the ownership of the system tables to ensure there are =
no corruptions.
Most should belong to user informix, but the " VERSION" table, tabid 99 =
should have a version number in the owner attribute. In your case this =
will probably be "7.10.UD1" or something like that. Don't worry that it =
does not relate to your specific version as it only changes when the =
internal structures change in Online. This attribute is used by ONline to =
upgrade and revert internal structures.
If it is corrupted your upgrade will appear to work but the database will =
be corrupted and unreachable. It is very unlikely that this table =
attrubute would be corrupted except in circumstances where someone tried =
to set the ownerships of tables and did not restrict the wherepart=20
EG. "Update systables set owner =3D 'DA' where 1=3D1"
In respect of time, It took me a 17 hour stint to upgrade our 30 GB =
system.
Onchecks etc had been run ahead of time.

Make 1 or more tape backups just in case. The upgrade should
run flawlessly. Everything is compatible. Just bring the engine
back up after you are done. (feel free to run ONCHECK if you want)
