Well, why should it buy inferior technology? I think it's pretty well established that Microsoft's Technology is not always of the first order, but its marketing definitely is. We can all think of examples where Microsoft has the best-selling offering in a product type, but far from the best product. This touches on the root of Informix's problems. They allowed their marketing people to get away with promoting the "sexy", futuristic aspects of the product set, rather than concentrating on the solid and unspectacular merits of a reliable and "performant" (there, I've started speaking American!) DBMS. Whether or not Microsoft buy will be largely independent of the quality of the technology, and primarily to do with whether the Informix product and customer set would enhance their strategy. My personal view is that, given they have SQL Server, it wouldn't. Neil Truby
