Re: Invisible Rows

I have just completed an extensive research effort into why the Invisible Rows phenomenon occurred. I stated originally that rows were added but could not be viewed by some users and that it started occurring out of the blue three weeks ago. After a days effort, I have discovered that three weeks ago someone ran bcheck to repair and rebuild the index for that table which had been corrupted for unknown reasons. I discovered that the system ran /usr/bin/bcheck instead of $INFORMIXDIR/bin/bcheck. This was because /usr/bin was higher in the $PATH. The /usr/bin/bcheck was left over from the days of the giants when we were running something earlier than the .01 series of software. At that time the binaries were loaded into system directories instead of executed from $INFORMIXDIR. When subsequent releases were installed, it did not automatically remove it from /usr/bin. Therefore, this system has been running a version of bcheck which is 6 years old (albeit run rarely). This version rebuilt the index in such a way that 4.0 had difficulty using the index to locate data (exact reasons unknown). I solved it finally by dropping the indexes and rebuilding them in isql (and of course removing /usr/bin/bcheck). I go through this narrative because someone else may have had some mysterious occurrence because of this and just blamed it on Outside Evil Forces (OEF).
