We had similar problems with Informix-DataDirector for VB, but we resolved by configuring correctly the BLOBSPACE, we had to increase the page size for the blobspace, sot that our blob data could fit in one single page, thus informix only needed to perform one page-read, increasing the performance at the server-side.
