Hi all Tim Wrote> >>I've recently installed NE3.0 TE1 on WIN95 at home. However, your installation notes specify that you need Microsoft networking software for the product to work. > >>If, as I recall, the directory has to be a shared one, how do you >>configure it on a stand alone PC? You must have a shared workspace, the directory it points to must therefore be shared under your operating system 95/NT. > >>You cannot share a directory, you do not have any hosts or services >>file. Ahh but you can.....and here is how, by the way, have your windows 95/NT installation disks handy. 1) - Computer Identification I am going to assume that you do not have a network-card/modem or the workstation in question. If this is the case then do the following. Click on the network icon in the control panel. There should be no network components installed. Under the 'Identification' tab, enter the following - replacing my variables with you own : Computer Name : ComputerName workgroup : Default Computer Description : My Computer 2) - Access Control Under the 'Access Control' tab, check the 'Share-Level access control radio button. 3) Configuration -Under the 'Configuration' tab, click the 'Add' button. -A 'Select Network Component Type' window will appear. -Select 'Client' then click the 'Add' button. -A 'Select Network Client' window will appear. -Under 'Manufacturers', find 'Microsoft' and highlight it. --Under 'Network Clients', select 'Client for Microsoft Networks' and click 'OK'. -Once the add is successful, you will be returned to the main 'Network' window, make you way back to the 'Select Network Component Type' window. -Select 'Adapter' and click the 'Add' button. -A 'Select Network Adapters' window will appear. -Under 'Manufacturers', find 'Microsoft' and highlight it. -Under 'Network Adapters', select 'Dial-Up Adapter' and click 'OK' -Once the add is successful, you will be returned to the main 'Network' window, make you way back to the 'Select Network Component Type' window. -Select 'Protocol' and click the 'Add' button. -Under 'Manufacturers', find 'Microsoft' and highlight it. -Under 'Network Protocols', select 'TCP/IP' and click 'OK' -Once the add is successful, you will be returned to the main 'Network' window. 4) - Properties -Under 'The Following Network Components Are Installed :' select 'Dial-Up Adapter' and click the 'Properties' button. -Under the 'Bindings' tab, check all the items, namely: IPX/SPX NetBEUI TCP/IP Then Click 'OK' and you will return to the main 'Network' window. -Under 'The Following Network Components Are Installed :' select 'TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter' and click the 'Properties' button. -Select the 'IP Address' tab and ensure that the radio button 'Obtain an IP address automatically' is checked. -Under the 'Bindings' tab, check bothe the items in the box ie: 'Client for Microsoft Networks' and 'File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks'. -Under the 'Advanced' tab, check the box at the bottom right to set TCP/IP as the default protocol. -Under the 'DNS Configuration' tab, check the 'Enable DNS' radio button. -Enter a 'Host' - here you can use the name you specified for 'Computer Name' under the 'Identification' tab. -Click 'OK' and you will return to the main 'Network' window. -There is a drop-down list box halfway down the screen laballed 'Primary Network Logon'. This should be set to 'Client for Microsoft Networks' -On the same screen, click on the 'File and Print Sharing' button. -Enable both the options and click 'OK' 5) You should be at the main screen again, from here just click 'OK' and get ready to insert 95 disks (for your sake I hope you installed off a CD). Once the copy of files is complete, the pc will ask you for a reboot. Do it and when it restarts open windows explorer. Right-Click on a directory that you wish to have as your shared workspace. Be sure that this is the name you want. If you set this as the shared workspace under RSAT, and then change the directory name later and re-share it, you will encounter problems. Once it is shared, Install MSVC 4.2 or 5.0 and then install NewEra. When RSAT fires up, create your private workspace as normal and find your shared drive in the window on the right for your shared workspace. Hey presto.....a standalone(no network card/no modem) installation of NewEra 3.0 TE1. If you have any major problems with the instructions here, mail the Informix list and and send a copy to me. I will be glad to answer any questions you may have in this matter. Good luck.
