IDS FC9 install over IDS FCX21?
Posted in 2008
Will asked how to apply IDS 9.40.FC9 over an existing 9.40.FCX21 install and how to back out safely, plus how client tools fit in. Art Kagel advised installing the new version in its own directory and using a symlink (e.g. /opt/informix/ids) as INFORMIXDIR so rollback is just re-pointing the link; the only files outside INFORMIXDIR are old shared-library links in /usr/lib, which should be removed and replaced by LD_LIBRARY_PATH. CSDK/4GL/ISQL may live in a separate INFORMIXDIR (needing sqlhosts copied/linked or INFORMIXSQLHOSTS set), and install order follows the "Rule of TEN" (Tools, Engine, Networking), with CSDK installed after IDS if it is newer. Questions were answered; no follow-up on the final list of manuals.

Hi everyone. I need to intsall the latest version of IDS 9.4 (I lknow this is
an old release). I need to install IDS 9.4 FC9 over an existing IDS FCX21
version in order to resolved some bugs in the FCX21 version that cause
intermittent ontape crashes. I have not done an upgrade like this before so
please pardon some of thes questions. My main question is for backing
out...When the FC9 is installed are there any files OTHER THAN what resides
under $INFORMIXDIR that get affected? I know with oracle installs I have done
that numerous files outside of $ORACLE_HOME are affected. So with regards to
Informix if I either make a backup of the CURRENT $INFORMIXDIR OR rename the
CURRENT $INFORMIXDIR before starting the FC9 install I should be able to
backout should I need to by simply pointing back to the original $INFORMIDIR
location? Is that true? Put another way, as long as I keep the directory
locations of the CURRENT $INFORMIXDIR and FC9 $INFORMIXDIR separate I would be
able to backout by simply pointing back to CURRENT $INFORMIXDIR? Is that true?
Hi all. Another thing :)-the application also uses SDK Client and Informix 4gl-would I need to reinstall this software along with the informix ids 9.4 FC9? From what I understand all informix client sofware must reside along with the engine software in the same $INFORMIXDIR. The database also uses Replication (one-way, asysnchronos). Are there any special considerations that need to be taken into account for Replication? I know...lot's of questions. Thanks
The 4GL and CSDK software can reside in the same INFORMIXDIR as IDS or a different one. It's just that clients will have to set INFORMIXDIR to the CSDK/4GL directory rather than the engine's directory and either a copy of the sqlhosts file or a link to it has to be installed in the etc subdir of the CSDK/4GL directory or the INFORMIXSQLHOSTS environment variable has to be set to the actual location of the sqlhosts file in the etc subdir of the IDS installation. Early versions of IDS (maybe including 9.40 I don't remember) linked several
shared libraries into /usr/lib, but that was never neccessary and it's more
of a problem if you install a newer version that DOESN'T make the links as
the older libs may be seen in /usr/lib before the newer ones in
$INFORMIXDIR/lib, so it's a good idea to remove those links before an
upgrade install and before a rollback and just set $INFORMIXDIR/lib into the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH instead as the newer releases do. I've actually been
removing the links AFTER installation since IDS v7.11 with no harm done, so
you DO NOT need the links in /usr/lib at all, then rollbacks are simple.
Best to install the new version in a new dir so that rollback is just a
matter of linking the old dir to whatever the clients use for INFORMIXDIR.
Typically I use INFORMIXDIR=/opt/informix/ids which is symbolic linked to
the actual install directory of whatever version I am currently running with
the last and possibly next versions installed in say
/opt/informix/ids_9.40.FC1X21 and /opt/informix/ids_9.40.FC9

Art. Thanks. You are God-send.
Art if I install into a completely new directory then this would mean I would also need to resintall the other Informix software that the application uses which is Client SDk, 4GL, and ISQL. Is that correct? I know that the Client SDK needs to be installed AFTER Informix 9.4 but do you know the order of 4GL and ISQL? I believe it's 4GL ISQL Informix 9.4 FC9 Client SDK Is that correct?
Yes, you should. You could install the tools into a separate directory so you won't have to do that again next time, but that's an aside. The normal install order is the Rule of TEN (Tools, Engine, Networking) modified by the rule that newer software should overwrite older packages. Networking is included in the engine now, so that's nothing to worry about anymore. So the rules say install ISQL., 4GL and CSDK first then IDS. The exception would be if the CSDK is later than the engine (9.40 was released with CSDK 2.81 or 2.90 IB, so if you are installing any of the v3.xx releases of the CSDK install AFTER IDS otherwise install it before the engine. One more thing? The manuals needed to do the FCX21 => FC9 upgrade are: 01) 9.4 Install Guide (generic) 02) 9.4 FC9 specific migration guide 03) 9.4 FC9 documentation notes 04) 9.4 FC9 release notes 05) 9.4 FC9 machine notes.... Did I miss anything? I just want to make sure I have read all the needed information. Thanks. Will
