I'm not sure about why it core dumps -- it shouldn't.
But then, no program should produce a core dump unless it is
a documented method of reporting an error.
I would expect the dbload statements to look like:
FILE "vme_database" delimiter "|" 7 ;
INSERT INTO Some_table_or_other { This was missing }
( project, manufact, model, serial_num, descrip, proj_id, comment )
values ( "gammasphere", f01, f02, f03, f05, f06, f07 );

Yes. It's also apt to be slow.
