insert question mark into character field (JDBC)

Can someone help w/ the syntax for inserting a question mark into a character field, through JDBC? I'm attempting to do something like this: pstmt = conn.prepareStatement("insert into tab1 values ('characters', 'more characters ?' )"); According to the JDBC Driver Programmer's Guide, the escape character syntax is {escape 'escape-char'} though I'm unable to use this successfully.
