Virtual Processors

I have a problem with a customer's site with a CPU virtual processor which seems to be running out of control. It occours when I run one or two programs, the CPU VP is taking about 90% of the system CPU time, and therefore bring the system to a general go slow. The Informix engine is version 7.23 UC1, and running on HPUX B.10.20 A. Does anyone know any reason why a CPU VP would take large amounts of CPU time.
