I am new for informix and would like to know, how to backup database and archivelog files to DISK rather than tape. Could please somebody tell me what are the paramaters that I would change in onconfig and command to backup to disk Thanks sreeni
Change
TAPEDEV /home/informix/level_0_backup #Directory for level 0 backup
LTAPEDEV /home/informix/logicallogs_backup #Directory for ogical logs backup
and then issue the following command
ontape -s -L 0
Hope that helps.

start
here:
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/pubs/library/
find the manuals for your database version....for example: "Informix
Dynamic Server V9.x" or "Informix Dynamic Server v7.x"... click on your
choice...
then select the language of your choice...
then you will see the set of manuals. You will be looking for something
like:
"IBM Informix Backup and Restore Guide, Version 9.4 (G251-1240-00)
This manual explains the concepts and methods that you need to
understand when you use the ON-Bar and ontape utilities to back up and
restore data. "
This would cover the basic ontape utility for backing up your database
as well as the more complex and versatile onbar utility. we use onbar
to back up the DB to tape and logical logs to disk.
have fun.

Hi, You
can use several commands like backup strategies,
but one of the most simple in binary mode is ONTAPE.
In your $ONCONFIG file you can updated to link TAPEDEV to a file tape.
=20
=20
For example, if you have this directory /opt/users/informix. There you
can execute
this command "touch tape0". Here you''re creating a empty file.
Then, you have to modify your $ONCONFIG writing obsolute path to this
file
TAPEDEV /opt/users/informix/tape0
=20
Caution:
You cann't use more than 2Gb for file single backup (Check ontape
manual). ontape uses
TAPESIZE parameter if you don't specify a size.=20
When it reaches 2gb or size specified in $ONCONFIG, ontape will ask you
for another tape, so,=20
you must rename actual tape0 and create another empty file tape0
=20
At end I suggest you, read ontape, onbar, dbschema from IDS manuals. And
if you can, try informix courses.
these are very helpful.
Regards!

The LTAPEDEV parameter points to a filesystem that resides on disk. -----Original Message----- From: SREENIVASA ....
