Why do you need to push anything out? Why not > have client requests go directly to the database for the info? > Ahem, uhm there are several applications which you may want to do this. I always use the example of a stock broker / trading desk application. Imagine yourself in a large brokerage office. Your task is to design a system to allow brokers to pull up client portfolios in one window and in the same window show the current trading prices in REAL TIME. How would you do this? (This is a rhetorical question. ;-) Or, in another window you want to show the ticker for what ever market feed you have in REAL TIME. Since you have lots of brokers, it doesn't make sense of pulling the data from the database. It makes sense to push it. Look at TIB, Teknekron Information Bus from Teknekron Trading Systems (Now owned by Reuters.) Its a publish / subscribe method of doing this. There was an article in ACM around 1993 -1994 on this. Does this make sense or have I been *hitting* the bottle again ? -Mikey
