I'm assuming you are on a Sun box since those are Veritas logical volumes, not file systems. You do not need to use an offset unless part of the volume is already being used. The only time you need to use an offset is when you do not use a volume manager and you slice the disks up using the OS utility format. In that case you would use an offset to avoid overwriting the VTOC.
