OnLine log space allocation
Posted in 1993
Hi, I'm setting up Informix/OnLine (5.01) on a Sun Sparc 10 for somewhere between 30 and 80 concurrent users. Small changes are made to the database every few minutes, but most transactions are only queries. The database is currently around the 80-100 Mb mark (on another machine) and we expect it to grow up to 300 Mb over the next 18-24 months. As a database administrator, what would you recommend for the physical and logical log sizes? In the administrator's book, there is a "20% rule" which suggestes a physical of 15Mb, and perhaps 45 x 1Mb logical logs. My gut feeling is that this is too high and we would be fine with a physical of no more that 8Mb, and only 24 (or so) x 1Mb logicals. Can anyone put forward reasons why I should stick with the "20% rule" rather than my own values? Feel free to either post a reply or to email me directly; I'll post a summary if there's anything useful.
