I did it without using JDBC. I did the Java side and my cohort did the Informix side in 4GL. The applet makes standard CGI calls to communicate with the server. This is done using the URL class. (Lots of good tutorials on this on the web for that.) The CGI programs then calls fglgo to run 4gl programs. It gets input from the command line arguments and returns the output to stdout. Not the sexiest way to do it, but it works and there's nothing extra to buy. A little brut force goes a long way!
