Selecting trailing blanks?

I want to create a file, using a select statement, which selects character columns without clipping them (stripping of trailing blanks ). Unload strips trailing blanks. I'm using a 4gl program at the moment because the report PRINT statement inlcludes trailing blanks when it outputs character columns. It is a frequent, varying, job and I would *much* rather do it with a simple SQL statement, any ideas?
