: I spoke with some Informix people some time ago about putting more than

I don't believe this is the case. Ontape requires that you use a rewind
on close tape device. If you don't use this type of device, you'll have major
problems if your ontape archive spans multiple tapes. Ontape does not ever
explicitly attempt to rewind a tape. But if your archive fits on a single
tape, or portion thereof, you could probably share the tape with
non-informix stuff. Make sure you use a no-rewind on open and close
device. However, it's probably not supported, your mileage may vary,
etc, etc, blah blah blah.
Onarchive does its own thing with the tapes. It controls, through the use
of ioctl() calls, the movements of the tape. Onarchive will assume that
it owns any tape you use with it, as discovered by the original
poster.
Offhand I don't know what would happen with dbexport and a no-rewind
tape device.
