Cheetah 2 on Windows Vista (64bits)
Posted in 2008
IDS 11.50.FC2 on 64-bit Vista worked fine from DB-Access, but JDBC clients (Server Studio, ILogin) failed with error -908 connecting to the server. Cause: Vista's IPV6_V6ONLY default meant the server, configured with HOST "*hostname", listened only on IPv6, while the Java clients used IPv4. Workarounds: add -Djava.net.preferIPv6Addresses=true to the client's Java command line, or drop the "*" / set an IPv4 host via setnet32. An IBM poster noted it was addressed in 11.50xC3.

Hi all,
I am running:
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.50.FC2
Software Serial Number AAA#B000000
Thu Aug 14 22:40:58 CDT 2008
On Windows Vista 64 bits...
I manage to connect to the engine via DB-Access, do all I want to do...
However, as soon as I want to go through Server Studio (or other JDBC, or
even ILogin), it fails...
Here is my env / what I did...
Firewall has exceptions on 9088, oninit, onspaces, dbaccess (most of them I
did not set myself).
If I run netstat, I see:
C:\\\\Program Files\\\\IBM\\\\IBM Informix Dynamic Server\\\\11.50>netstat -a | grep
9088
TCP [::]:9088 bugsbunny:0 LISTENING
There is nothing else on 9088, if I stop the service or oninit, nothing is
listening anymore.
Here is my env:

Jean, probably a very long shot: +- PROTOCOL = olscotcp Is this a typo or...? I don't have any Windows installations, but I would expect to see "olsoctcp" there too (notice: sco <-> soc). But I may be completely missing the point here... Cheers Davorin
Jean, 1/ Protocol should be olsoctcp 2/ What does the eror message say ? Server Studio: Error -908: Attempt to connect to database server (ol_bugsbunny) failed. (it was olsoctcp already, typo). Ilogin now works! Ok -- I found it... It's ALWAYS the same problem with Vista and I forgot about it... I really need to write something in my blog... As Vista is TCP/IP version 6, you need to run java in IPv6... To do so, add: -Djava.net.preferIPv6Addresses=true To the Java command line If you used server studio, change the command line to something like: "C:\\\\Program Files (x86)\\\\AGS\\\\jre\\\\bin\\\\javaw.exe" -Xmx384m -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true -Djava.net.preferIPv6Addresses=true -classpath ".;lib\\\\ifxjdbc.jar;lib\\\\derby.jar;lib\\\\jh.jar;lib\\\\tools.jar" launcher -root "C:\\\\Program Files (x86)\\\\AGS" > -----Original Message----- > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of > Jean Georges Perrin > Sent: Wednesday, 22 October, 2008 17:08 > To: ids@iiug.org > Subject: RE: Cheetah 2 on Windows Vista (64bits) [13759] > > Server Studio: > > Error -908: Attempt to connect to database server (ol_bugsbunny) > failed. > > (it was olsoctcp already, typo). > > Ilogin now works! Excellent tip ! I was given another way to connect but some troubles... This seem the way to go with Server Studio. You're right. Vista socket option IPV6_V6ONLY is 'true' by default. When we set hostname as "*myvista" in registry, IDS server only can accept IPv6 address. if you want use IPv4 address, you can remove "*" from hostname or change to IPv4 address with 'setnet32' utility. BTW this issue is fixed in 11.50xC3 release. Thanks Jim
Which issue? The Java stuff or the hostname? > -----Original Message----- > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of > JIM XIAO > Sent: Thursday, 23 October, 2008 18:43 > To: ids@iiug.org > Subject: Re: Cheetah 2 on Windows Vista (64bits) [13779] > > You're right. when "*hostname" is used on Vista, IDS 11.50xC3 can work with both IPv4 and IPv6 clients, no workaround needed. But with 11.50xC1/2 we need modify hostname registry or java client as workaround. Thanks
That will permit using Server Studio with no trouble ...
