This was a FAQ. You can still search for it in the usenet archives.
The answer is, in short, no.
However, it can, and has, been implemented by maintaining separate
"search tables" for each char column you want to search for or a
separate lower case column on the table. Not a very good solution,
but maybe if you complain to informix about it,
they might implement case insensitive searches someday.
While you're at it, ask for multiple column subqueries, so that most
correlated subqueries would be unneccessary:
select a from table1
where b,c in
(select b,c from table2)
