WORM Drives with Online 7.1
Posted in 1995
Is anyone using WORM drives with Online 7.1 to hold tables? Can you set up a WORM drive as a raw disk in Unix? It seems to me that with Online 7.1 capability to place index pages in different dbspaces from the table data it should now be possible to write archive tables to a WORM drive. You would define the WORM drive as a raw drive and specify that the data is to be stored on the dbspaces that are assigned to the raw partions on the WORM drive. The index pages would be assigned to standard dbspaces on ordinary drives. This way you could drop and recreate indexes and the system can do index rebalancing and add new entries while maintaining a stable data set on the WORM drive for archiving or data warehouse purposes. Archiving would continue as normal but recovery would use the capability to restore only the dbspaces on the ordinary drives? A loss of an index disk would just require you to drop and rebuild the index. Is this possible? Is anyone doing it?
