Phil Stout sought users of the Workstream application on Informix for 24x7 architecture advice, and asked whether a 2.3 million row, four-column index could be rebuilt in under 35 minutes without fragmentation. John Carlson and Jack Parker asked about version, hardware, index type, column types and row size. Vivek Chaudhary used round robin fragmentation, building indexes in maintenance mode with PDQPRIORITY, under an hour for 12 million rows.

I'm looking for a DBA or Application developer who is supporting the
Workstream application by Applied Materials on Informix DB. My customer wants
to be a true 24x7 application, but I can't get architecture information
showing this is possible. I'd also like to know if anyone can rebuild a 2.3
million row index on 4 columns in less than 35 minutes without fragmentation.
I need architecture (hardware to accomplish this response time)

I can't
speak for Workstream . . . .but as to your other issues.
What Informix version?
What hardware?
The time for the index build sounds reasonable. Are these indices attached
or detached?

2.3
million on 4 columns in 35 minutes? What are the column types in
question, and what is the rowsize of the table?
cheers
j.

I use
workstream and I am sure either you're talking about wiplth or
entenh. I use round robin fragmentation and indexes are only created
when system is in maintenance mode so that you can use PDQPRIORITY and
all that goes alongwith that.
I am not sure if we can do it in 35 mins but with 12 mil. rows, I could
create indexes in under an hour. BTW, its record-size is 1.7kb.
