My name's not Richard, but a lot of people call me Dick (Head), so
I'll leap into the fray here:
I had a site with only around 60 users (at that time), and for
performance reasons, I left a lot of the tables on page-level
locking, and we had endless unnecessary "record is locked" errors.
The loss of concurrency was quite astonishing. That site is now at
200+ users, and I'd hate to think what the loss of productivity would
have been due to excessive locking if we still didn't have row level
locking.
Some notes on this:
1. Richard also forgot the problem applies to INSERTs, which in an
OLTP system can be even worse.
2. RDBMS's which don't support row level locking *do* all suck.
3. It wasn't really a deliberate decision to apply page level locking
for performance, I just forgot to alter the tables after our initial
dbexport/dbimport.

You have a vivid imagination and often think you

minor influence over your friends and people
resent you for flaunting your power. You lack
confidence and are generally a coward. Pisces
