IDS 9.40 is built on RH 7.2, IIRC. As Neil said, it will run on any recent distro, but read release notes for required kernel and glibc version (I hit this recently - read those notes carefully :-) Having database on one platform and app on another is probably the most common configuration nowadays (usually Win GUI clients and *ix server). The versions even don't have to be the same (within reason). Impact on performance will, on one hand, be beneficial because you spread server and front end load over different boxes. OTOH, network communication does impose some small penalty, so don't link those boxes via 9600 bps modem :-) The detail of boxes running the same OS or not is irrelevant. General Informix installation and network setup is a tad beyond the scope of a newsgroup, but docs are pretty good. Read them and come back with more specific questions if they arise :-) Cheers!
