Scheduled Automatic Backup - FAIL
Posted in 2023
Luis Panozzo (14.10.FC10) got 'could not access ONCONFIG' warnings from InformixHQ scheduled ontape backups, though manual ontape worked. Andreas Legner narrowed it to the admin() call, not HQ. Luis found that the failure happened when the engine was started without the ONCONFIG environment variable; restarting with it set fixed it and the backup then ran.

Hi.
I'm getting a warning when trying to backup using Scheduled Backup.
Here installation details:
Linux RHEL 8.7
Informix 14.10.FC10 (Also the same with 14.10.FC9)
INFORMIXDIR /home/informix
Backup directory /backup/data.
Owner informix
Permissions 770
I used InformixHQ to create ontape backup level 0
When I try to do the backup, I'm getting:
Warning: could not access ONCONFIG /home/informix/etc//home/informix.
WARNING: Cannot access configuration file /home/informix/etc//home/informix.
running ontape -s -L 0 as informix, it work as always.
I don't know which is the problem.
Thank You

You posted this setting INFORMIXDIR /home/informix What is the ONCONFIG setting? (It would seem like you set ONCONFIG to /home/informix too, rather than to the name of your onconfig file.) The file ultimately being used will be: $INFORMIXDIR/etc/$ONCONFIG. HTH, Andreas ------------------------------ Andreas Legner ------------------------------
Hi Andreas.
First it was without $ONCONFIG setting.
Then I was thinking about this and set:
export ONCONFIG=onconfigThe same behavior.
Thank you.

So the Informix server software is installed under /home/informix? Which I'd not consider ideal, esp. if this really is user informix' $HOME, but be it so. And this instance's configuration file is /home/informix/etc/onconfig? ------------------------------ Andreas Legner ------------------------------

I think I'm not quite getting what you're doing:
- a manual ontape backup works - so server environment shouldn't be an issue.
- ontape (?) backup through HQ, connected to same server --- throws said warnings, how, where?

Hi Andreas. When it is manual, it works. Because it is using TAPEDEV parameter from onconfig. When using HQ I'm getting this warning in the LOG backup. So, if I try execute task, same thing. Thanks. -- Luis Panozzo Saavedra
Strange.
Can you post an 'onstat -g env' output from the server?

Here it is.

Looking good, all there that we'd expect (how else would this server run?)
So, to get HQ out of the picture, would the following work or run onto same problem:
echo "execute function admin('ontape archive directory level 0', '/backup/data', '32');" | dbaccess sysadmin

Informix is the only thing. Running execute function admin Nothing happened The ph_task file has: -- Luis Panozzo Saavedra
Don't look in ph_taks (those entries likely are for some sensors you've asked HQ to configure?), look in command_history table instead. Or re-run the statement with 'task' instead of 'admin'. ------------------------------ Andreas Legner ------------------------------

Alright, so not an HQ problem. Now, since it says "Warning" only, does a backup get created? Should be mentioned in online.log, maybe also other messages of interest? ------------------------------ Andreas Legner ------------------------------
Andreas. I found this thing. Starting the engine When ONCONFIG environment variable is not set, the problem appears. When ONCONFIG environment variable is set, no problem. I just restart the engine with ONCONFIG environment variable set, everything working fine. So the warning is not only a Warning, No backup made. I knew that it is not necessary ONCONFIG environment variable when you are using just one engine. But seems like it is necessary for Backup using execute function [admin|task] Thank You -- Luis Panozzo Saavedra Gerente Técnico luis_panozzo@sisa.com.bo Soluciones Integrales S.A. Av. Interesting find!
Yes, you're right, if ONCONFIG env var isn't set, "onconfig" would be assumed, but apparently not in all places.
Also interesting that 'onstat -g env' hides the fact that ONCONFIG actually isn't set.

Andreas. Yes, Very interesting. Thank You for your time. Regards. -- Luis Panozzo Saavedra
