Yup, you are right on the button with the optimiser, unless you know your data, know what you are doing and have been around your engine for some time to know how it behaves, you aint gonna get it right. Sequential scans can a good thing, who puts an index on a tiny table? just asking for overhead. The boss is an ex-vax dude, ex-cobol and the suchlike. Writes some of the best code i've ever seen.
