FRAGMENT expression

I'm planning to fragment some tables and indexes, and use the MOD expression. But I have one problem that one indexed column is a VARCHAR, and I think this is not possible with MOD. All the other tables and indexes I will fragment by the MOD expression, I can use columns with INTEGER NOT NULL. So, are there some expressions I could use that will work with both VARCHAR and INTEGER, and what would those be? Does it have to be that if I use the MOD on the tables, I have to use same expression in the indexes?
