Well, not exactly. The destination of ontape -s is determined by TAPEDEV; the
destination of ontape -a or ontape -c is determined by LTAPEDEV.
But perhaps more to the point is whether, having set TAPEDEV to a valid device,
the logical logs are actually stored with an ontape -s. The answer is, some of
them are. That is, whatever is actually in use at the time the archive was
started. This is so that, if you do only a physical restore of the archive,
and don't roll forward any logs, OnLine can roll back any transactions that
were open at the time of the archive, and bring your system back up in a state
of transactional integrity. Beyond that, you have to back up your logical logs
using ontape -a or ontape -c in order to recover past the point where the
archive started.
